Attorney General Janet T. Mills warns Maine people to avoid a
scam that has appeared on the internet classifieds site Craig’s List.
Recently, a Maine homeowner discovered his house, as well as photographs
of the property, listed for rent on Craig’s List without his knowledge.
The ad listed a Nigerian email address for responses and payment for the
fictitious rental. One shopper was ready to rent the home by sending her
money to Nigeria. Fortunately, the shopper contacted the Maine
homeowner and discovered the scam before sending any funds to the scam artist.
The Attorney General reminds Maine consumers to never send money
in response to an internet sale or rental offer without first confirming that the
ad is legitimate or from a known and trusted business.

This will be a one day
seminar on CITIZEN preparedness and response should a major incident ever occur
in Penobscot County. There
is no cost for attendance or the meals. This unique training opportunity is
designed to educate the
community how best to respond to a disaster when emergency responders are
overwhelmed. Hurricane
Katrina has taught us that citizens may be left to cope with a crisis for the
first
few hours or even longer.
The audience should consist of a mix of private citizens, community leaders.
This training is targeted to
the local citizen, community leaders and not the first responder.

Ross’ Editorial Reference LD821
Currently the Legislature is considering a bill LD 821, that
would require pharmaceutical companies to help fund an unused prescription take
back program in the State of Maine. At present, the common method for an
individual to dispose of unused medicines is through the trash or septic
system, a method that is legal, but not necessarily safe for our
environment or society. More commonly, unused medicines collect in our medicine
cabinets and closets… Click

Dear Cpl. Day,
This letter of commendation
is being issued regarding your actions in developing an inmate transportation
system for county jails throughout the state.
As you know, during these difficult economic times; governments are
searching for ways to save taxpayer money while still operating efficient
systems. The newly formed Board of
Corrections has expressed an interest in finding ways that counties and state
agencies can move inmates throughout the state in a manner that reduces
unnecessary trips and maximizes vehicle capacity. You developed a “Hub System” concept that
that meets the above criteria and has been adopted as a pilot project in
Northern Maine. Early statistics
indicate that your system will result in substantial cost savings and result in
a significantly improved system.
Your administrative team
would like to commend you for your work.
It continues to reinforce the value of the Penobscot County Jail as an
integral component in the refined correctional system being established in the
state. It also provides for taxpayer
relief while improving a current system.
Your plan was initially developed several years ago without the
prompting of any agency, but has gained momentum with the new unified
correctional system. Today, state and
county jails and prisons are working collaboratively on inmate transportation
issues. You should take pride in your
accomplishment.
Sincerely,
Glenn Ross,
Sheriff
