Before the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office can completely process an application for Corrections or Law Enforcement, the applicant must have passed the ALERT Test. The ALERT examination is offered at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. To make an appointment please call (207)877-8000.


Applicants must bring a government issued picture id (drivers license) and a $50.00 fee. If paying with cash, please bring the correct amount. If paying by check, make it payable to “Treasurer, State of Maine”. Applicants should arrive at 8:15 AM, 15 minutes prior to the start of the exam at 8:30 AM. Anyone arriving after the exam has started will be asked to reschedule. Job Summary:

Under supervision this position prepares, bakes and cooks food in preparation for the Penobscot County Jail; maintains food inventory and storage, maintains sanitary working conditions; provides lead direction to institution workers.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
• Supervises and conducts food preparation
• Monitors Trustees in the kitchen sanitation process
• Monitors food temperatures and portion control
• Follows standard recipes
• Uses correct diets (i.e. calorie count) and record them accordingly
• Follows instructions from Cook supervisor
• Maintain a clean/safe environment for self as well as other co-workers by following Federal and State procedures.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience required:

High School diploma or equivalent required, successfully pass pre-employment background checks to include personal, criminal, and motor vehicle and valid driver’s license. Cooking experience with knowledge of commercial sized kitchen equipment, sanitation practices, special diet certifications and institutional food preparation techniques preferred. Ability to work in a team setting with commitment to high level of customer service is required.

Corrections Officer – Full and Part-Time Openings


The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is seeking Correction Officers.  The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office has an immediate need for full and part-time Corrections Officers.  You must be 19 years old, possess a high school diploma or G.E.D, and meet all criteria listed in the application packet and the entrance standards for the Basic Corrections Training Program located on the Maine Criminal Justice Academy's website.  Applicant must be able to attend eight (8) 40-hour weeks of orientation/training.  Part-time starting pay rate is $12.00 per hour.  The 2017 full-time pay range is $15.82 to $19.97 per hour.  Application packets are available 8 to 4 M-F at the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, 85 Hammond St., Bangor, ME 04401 or, on our website.
