The Civil Process Division is responsible
for the service of non-criminal subpoenas and
documents. Generally, civil
process pertains to documents regarding divorce,
law suits, civil disputes, landlord-tenant
notices, etc. These cases will eventually be
heard in civil court by a judge.
Civil process servers are reimbursed by
the plaintiff for the service of all documents
and related service costs.
The division is self-supporting in revenue.
Two full-time servers manage the document
service in the Greater
Bangor
area and other part-time servers are assigned
papers in the outlying areas of
Penobscot
County
. Individuals wishing to have
legal service of civil process may drop off the
documents at the lobby of the sheriff’s office
during regular business hours or may mail them
to the following address. A
$35.00 deposit is required on services within 20
miles of Bangor and $45.00 deposit on services
in the outlying areas. Deposits are required on
all requests except when forwarded by an
attorney’s office..
You will receive either a refund or
invoice for the actual amount at the time of
service. Please provide as
much information as possible as to the location
of the person to be served, as well as your own
contact numbers. This will
help keep the cost down by eliminating
unnecessary travel. Civil
process servers cannot by law give out legal
advice; they can only explain service
procedures.
